“an Arrangement and Bundle of Dried Poppy Seed Pods” (Watercolor Painting and Poem) by D. R. Hubbell

“an Arrangement and Bundle of Dried Poppy Seed Pods” (watercolor) by D. R. Hubbell (September 2020)

Wooden shells of their former selves,

grains of seeds instead of sand, blown in Summer breeze,

You will blanket under Fall leaves,

sleep in Winter and come again

with scarlet banners

in Spring.

Orion’s Belt Humming Bird (watercolor and poem) by D. R. Hubbell

“Orion’s Belt Humming Bird” watercolor painting by D.R. Hubbell, February 2020

We head South to see the whales

Old growth forest, rooted trails

We move west while standing still

A subduction zone beneath our feet

Pushing up and out to the ocean

In time and motion with the sea

Snow moon comes again

A frozen glow shines through February’s mist

The humming birds stay with us

Orion’s belt between Betelgeuse and Rigel keeping company

We have worn this winter well through icy winds

and restless swells

because I can always find a warm fire burning

a place of safety

in your eyes.
